Richmond Police Recommend Ways to Avoid Becoming a Volunteer Victim
In many auto theft cases, owners have left keys in the vehicles.
“If you leave your doors unlocked or your keys in your car, you are volunteering to be a victim,” says Lt. Robert Marland. “Residents must take some personal responsibility to avoid becoming the victims of auto theft.”
To not become a victim of auto theft, you should –
-
Lock your car. Most cars are unlocked when they are stolen.
-
Never leave your keys in the car. They will be found.
-
Never leave your car to warm up unattended.
-
Park in well-lighted areas.
-
Park in well-traveled areas.
-
Do not leave the registration in the car. Carry it with you.
-
Use an anti-theft device such as an alarm, steering wheel lock, column collar, or shut-off switch.
Crimes occur because the criminal has the ability, the desire, and the opportunity to commit the crime. Citizens cannot affect the criminal’s ability or desire, but they can hinder their opportunity.
